Down Syndrome and Disability Employment Awareness Month

During October, we recognize Down Syndrome Awareness Month and Disability Employment Awareness Month—two observances that share an important message: Every person has value, abilities, and something meaningful to contribute. These observances give us an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments, promote inclusion, and recognize the importance of providing people with disabilities with opportunities to participate, grow, and succeed.

Whether someone is learning a new skill, reaching apersonal goal, contributing at work, building relationships, or becoming more independent, every accomplishment matters. Sometimes those accomplishments may look different from person to person, but they are all worth recognizing and celebrating.

We can also think about the role each of us plays increating an inclusive environment. Supporting someone may mean encouraging them to try something new, listening to their choices, recognizing their strengths, or simply making sure they feel included and respected.

Together, these observances remind us that inclusion is not just about awareness—it is about action. It is about creating opportunities, removing barriers, and seeing the person beyond the disability. When we focus on abilities and provide the support people need, we help create a community where everyone has the opportunity to make a difference.

Everyone has a story, everyone has strengths, and everyone deserves the opportunity to reach their goals!
