National Public Health Week

Every first week of April is observed as National Public Health Week (NPHW)! This year April 4th-10th is dedicated to champion the health of all Americans. NPHW was created by the American Public Health Association (APHA) to help celebrate all of the successes in the public health field and show new approaches that will help solve challenges that arise. The 2022 theme for this national week is “Public Health is Where You Are” and focuses on making communities healthier and safer.

Since 1955,this initiative has highlighted the issues that can improve the health and happiness of Americans. NPHW seeks to address the root causes of disease, poor health, and different lifestyles. It first recognizes that healthcare has long remained a privilege and not a right that many people can afford. Social determinants of health, i.e. where people are born, their neighborhoods, different lives, and backgrounds determine their quality of and access to healthcare.

National Public Health Week is committed to making health inclusive and equitable for everyone. Almost 2.5 billion work days a year are lost due to illness, which equates to a$1 trillion loss in productivity. This fact has been even more obvious due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Through health education, awareness campaigns and the dedication of the public health and health care workforce, our country is far better positioned today than we were a year ago. Due to public health efforts, we have more than 250 million Americans vaccinated with at least one dose.

As this week is used to campaign for inclusive, fair, and accessible health policies, to get more information and to find events to partake in, please visit the American Public Health Association.
