World COPD Day, observed on November 18 raises awareness about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a chronic lung condition that can make breathing difficult. COPD includes conditions such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema and can significantly affect a person’s daily life.
Common symptoms include persistent coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, increased mucus production and fatigue. Although smoking is a major risk factors, COPD can also be associated secondhand smoke, air pollution, and long-term exposure to dust or chemicals. Because symptoms may develop gradually, they can sometimes be overlooked or mistaken for normal aging.
Protecting lung health is important at every age. Avoiding tobacco smoke, staying physically active and following prescribed treatments, keeping vaccinations up to date, and speaking with a healthcare provider about ongoing breathing problems can help support better lung health.
This World COPD Day, take a moment to learn signs, understand your risk, and encourage others to take their breathing seriously. Early recognition and proper management can help people with COPD breathe reasier and maintain a better quality of life.
