One Season, Three Threats: Shield Yourself with Vaccines

The Pennsylvania Department of Health is reminding the public that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent serious illness from influenza, COVID-19, and RSV during the upcoming respiratory season. The CDC expects hospitalizations this fall and winter to be similar to last year, when these three viruses combined caused significant illness across all age groups.

Anyone can become sick, but certain groups are at higher risk of complications. Older adults, young children, pregnant people, and those with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease are more likely to experience severe outcomes from the flu. Adults over 65, people with underlying health conditions, and individuals with intellectual disabilities face the greatest danger from COVID-19. RSV is of particular concern for infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems or chronic heart and lung disease.

Vaccination is recommended for nearly everyone six months of age and older. For flu, adults65 and older are advised to receive a high-dose or adjuvanted vaccine, though any age-appropriate vaccine offers protection. The updated 2025–26 COVID-19vaccines target the JN.1 strain and are recommended for everyone six months and older, including during pregnancy. A one-time RSV vaccine is now available for adults 75 and older, as well as adults aged 50 to 74 with risk factors. Pregnant patients between 32 and 36 weeks are advised to receive an RSV vaccine to help protect their newborns, while infants under eight months may receive preventive antibody protection.

Vaccines can be administered together at the same visit, and side effects are generally mild and temporary. Now is the time to talk with your healthcare provider about the best vaccination plan for you and your family so that you are protected before virus activity peaks this season.
