What is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)?

‍Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a rare genetic neuromuscular disorder that affects the nerve cells responsible forcontrolling voluntary muscle movement. As these nerve cells weaken, musclesbecome progressively weaker, making activities such as sitting, walking, swallowing, and breathing more difficult.

Although there is currently no cure, significant advances in treatment have greatly improved outcomes. Early diagnosis and intervention can help:

• Muscle weakness and poor muscle tone
• Delayed motor milestones
• Difficulty sitting, standing, or walking
• Trouble swallowing or feeding
• Breathing difficulties
• Fatigue and decreased endurance

• SMA affects approximately 1 in every 10,000 births.
• About 1 in 40 to 50 people are carriers of the altered gene without knowing it.
• MA can affect infants, children, and adults.
