April 2022 is National Autism Awareness Month!
And April 2nd 2022 is World Autism Awareness Day !
Every April we celebrate World Autism Month, beginning with United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. Throughout the month, encouragement is focused on sharing stories and providing opportunities to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism, fostering worldwide support.
This is particularly important to individuals we serve with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
How can we help those that we serve celebrate this special month?
PCHC has more information at the links below:
- Get to know what resources are available in your community to support individuals with ASD.
- Encourage individuals you support to share their stories in a way in which they are comfortable.
- Many individuals with the diagnosis of ASD have a sensory processing disorder (SPD). Take the time to ensure the individuals you support have the opportunity to have a sensory diet developed with an occupational therapist (OT). If possible collaborate with an OT who hasexperience in supporting individuals with an ASD.
- Try to remember that sensory input does not only include touch or sensation! It may also include sensitivity to food texture and temperature, or hearing sensitivity which is also known as hyperacuity.
