National Family Caregivers Month

caregiver monthNovember is a time to recognize family caregivers nationwide. This year the theme is “Caregiving Around the Clock” because it is truly a job that has no breaks, 24 hours, 7 days a week.  It is a challenging role that can lead to exhaustion and burn out, but it is important to know as a caregiver you are not alone. Over 44 million people are family caregivers for loved ones that have special and/or medical needs.

It is important for caregivers to take time to have “self-care”. The long-term and short-term benefits of self-care have a lasting impact on the quality of life of caregivers, individuals and families.  Although it should be easy to take time to take care of ourselves, it can be tough with the busy schedules and various tasks we complete every day.

 

 

 Here are some ways that you can introduce self-care into your routine:

  • Write in a journal
  • Listen to music
  • Take a 30 minute walk
  • Meditation
  •  Unplug from electronic devices
  • Eat healthy
