May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Millions of Americans suffer from mental illness. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans are affected by mental illness. People need to know that mental health is just as important as physical health and is just as treatable.

We all need to help stop the stigma associated with poor mental health. Mental Health Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to combat negative attitudes, prejudice and discrimination that prevent people from accessing treatments and supports that could help them. Mental illness is just another form of illness. Like physical illness it affects a person’s ability to do the things they need and want to do.

Raising awareness of mental health every day of the year is important. Raising the number of people in Philadelphia and the rest of the United States living happy, healthier and more productive lives is a noble goal. By working together we can help build strong, mentally well communities.
